I love Meghan McCain. Sure people call her vapid, opportunistic, and so on – which makes it hard to admit how alike I think we are. Her ultra-liberal-conservativism neatly complements my ultra-conservative-liberalism. I think we could be political soul mates.
As a 20-something woman who is only slightly interested in politics, it is refreshing to have a daughter of a politician take a completely different approach to the media than any political progeny we have known. Instead of Chelsea being guarded like Gitmo or the Bush Twins being arrested for (seemingly constant) underage public drunkenness, Meghan puts herself out in the public eye and says this is who I am take me or leave me.
She is the best thing to happen to the GOP since Sarah Palin went rogue and tore the House of Gingrich limb by limb. Meghan is a breath of fresh air for the politically bored; her blogs kept us somewhat entertained when old people were debating health care in 2008 and her lack of filter keeps us interested today.
Earlier this month, Meghan spent a "spontaneous night in" and decided to document it on her twittpic. So what? She uploaded a picture of herself spending a night in onto her twitter page. Innocent enough right?? Not according to her many twitter followers and slowly what seemed to be the rest of us. The backlash started almost immediately after the picture was posted prompting Meghan to respond to the criticism throughout the night and onto the next day, at one point saying, "So I took a fun picture not thinking anything about what I was wearing but apparently anything other than a pantsuit I am a slut…"
You be the judge: a soon to be 25-year-old woman posting a fully clothed, yet somehow scandalous picture of herself on the internet, or the grown up daughter of a politician who should have known what was going to happen?
In the end, even though I consider myself fairly liberal, it is disappointing. Meghan knew what she was showing off in that picture and what the outcome would be. If she’s gonna post it, she should own it. She should stop playing dumb and remind me why I shouldn’t be embarrassed to like her.
